Auto Glass Cracks: Is Your
Windshield Repairable?

Though windshields are designed to withstand shattering when an object strikes it along the interstate, that’s not to say a simple chip or crack is of little concern. Chips and cracks can most often be repaired, yet it depends on the size, depth, and location of said crack. And when a crack does occur, it’s essential you have it taken care of promptly, as it can easily spread across the windshield, causing more damage and putting your safety at risk.

Fortunately, when your windshield is compromised by a crack or chip, the Auto Glass Specialists of Utah are here to lend a hand. Whether you need a chip repaired or complete windshield replacement, we have the expertise to handle it. Of course, most vehicle owners hope their windshield can be repaired without replacement, but as mentioned above, this isn’t always possible. So, is your windshield repairable? Take a moment to find out and take a look at the information provided below.

When is Your Windshield Repairable?

As mentioned, most minor chips and cracks can be repaired, but it depends on the size, shape and location. For the most part, cracks shorter than three inches and chips with less than a one-inch diameter can be fixed. Of course, the type of crack/chip, as well as its location, are also two deciding factors. The types listed below can most often be taken care of without replacement:

  • Star: Short cracks spreading from the center point of impact
  • Bullseye: Circular in shape with point of impact in the center
  • Half Moon: Also called partial bullseye with a partially circular shape
  • Crack Chip: Single crack about the size of a quarter
  • Pit: Small fragment of glass missing

As a general rule, if the crack can be concealed by placing a quarter over it, it can most likely be repaired. However, the location of the crack may warrant the need for windshield replacement. For instance, if the crack is in your field of view, the repair may leave behind discoloration that could affect your vision. When cracks are at or near the edge of the glass, replacement is often necessary as a means to ensure safety and abide by such laws. Still unsure if your windshield is repairable?

When Windshield Replacement is Necessary

In general, the circumstances above can most often be repaired, but it really comes down to each individual case. Because windshields consist of multiple layers, it’s not always possible to determine whether replacement is needed at first glance. Provided below is a list of issues that warrant windshield replacement:

  • Crack is on the inside
  • Damage penetrates both layers of glass
  • Damage crosses rain sensor
  • Cracks over 18 inches long
  • Edge cracks and/or chips
  • Damage is in the driver’s field of view
  • Contaminated cracks
